Why not invite all those nervous parents in for first 10 minutes to talk with them, putting their minds at ease? Have the iPod playing calming music in the background. Share with them a few details about how your classroom day will be directed. Remind them of lunchtime visitation, volunteering, and end of the day procedures. Encourage those extra hugs and kisses “good-bye” afterward. Doing this with a smile on your face, will equate to a placing a million dollar deposit into your ”classroom bank account”!

The Value of Visuals

Creating visuals for use with the SMART Board (or any interactive whiteboard) is invaluable to all students, especially those with learning challenges or our ESL students. Many free quality pre-created visuals are available for you to download when you Google: Jack Hartmann Power Points. The book, Digital Footsteps also give many more tips for using and developing visuals for the elementary classroom. Songforteaching.com is a great website for discovering a variety of music, books, and more teaching stuff! They will be selling Digital Footsteps, in e-book format soon!
